Over 10 million people shave their heads in India each year in a process known as “tonsure”. Head tonsuring (shaving the head) is a custom and a symbolic gesture – surrendering one’s personality to God. Devotees offer their hair to God for favours received, to show gratitude and reverence. People go on a pilgrimage to different temples to shave off their hair. This is a practice in Southern India. A child’s first haircut between the ages of one and three is an event with overtones very similar to a Christian baptism. Indian women traditionally have long hair and they take measures to maintain it. Majority of the rural Indian women use natural products to protect their hair restricting the use of chemicals (shampoo) to clean and embellish their hair. So Indian Hair is natural – strong and durable and can be coloured, curled, heated and blow-dried. South Indian hair is free of henna (natural hair colour dye) so there is always a good demand. This type of hair is known as “Virgin Hair”.
